Overview

Born2Bond LC177 for UV bonding of glass and clear plastics

Born2Bond LC177 from Bostik is a one-part UV cure acrylic adhesive designed for the fast bonding of glass, plastics and metals.

Optically clear, it suits glass and clear plastic assemblies in PMMA and ABS where the look and discretion of the bond line count as much as its strength. Adezif is a distributor of Bostik / Born2Bond adhesives.

    Its key properties:

    • On-demand UV cure from 365 to 405 nm, set in a few seconds
    • Optical clarity and an invisible bond line
    • Elastic with 200 to 230 % elongation
    • Impact resistant with gap filling properties
    • Service temperature from −40 to +120 °C
    • Adheres to glass, PMMA, ABS and metals; limited use on polycarbonate — for PC, choose the Born2Bond LC2100

Before application, the surface must be clean, dry and degreased.

Like every light cure adhesive, the LC177 only cures on exposure to UV light between 365 and 405 nm: this is on-demand curing.

The operator has all the time needed to position and reposition the parts, then triggers the set in a few seconds under a UV lamp. The result is short production cycles and parts that can be handled immediately.

          Applications of Bostik Born2Bond LC177

    Optics and glassware

The clear bond line and the 200 to 230 % elongation suit assemblies where a discreet joint counts as much as mechanical strength. Shear strength reaches 7 MPa on PMMA and 5 MPa on glass, with a joint that stays invisible once cured.

    POS displays and signage

A fixture time of 6 to 8 seconds under a 405 nm LED allows short cycles on glass, PMMA and ABS assemblies, with free repositioning before exposure. Its gap filling properties take up cutting tolerances on display parts.

Electronics and assemblies exposed to vibration

Thanks to Nanostrength® technology, the LC177 combines clarity, elasticity and impact resistance: it absorbs vibration and impact without cracking, and holds from −40 to +120 °C. Solvent free and non-toxic.

Available viscosities and application of the LC177

The LC177 comes in three viscosities to match the application: XLV very low at 60 to 80 cP with an 8 second fixture time, for tight gaps and capillary flow, HV at 20,000 to 40,000 cP with a 7 second fixture time, for a controlled bead, and GEL at 110,000 to 150,000 cP with a 6 second fixture time, for vertical surfaces and gap filling.

Dispense from a metering unit or a syringe, then expose under a UV lamp or 405 nm LED. Check that the light actually reaches the joint: at least one substrate must be transparent to UV.
