What is the HB Fuller TEC 540 adhesive?
The TEC 540 is a solvent-free acrylic dispersion adhesive from H.B. Fuller dedicated to laying resilient floor coverings. What sets it apart is that a single product can be laid in three different ways, depending on how long the installer waits before rolling the covering down.
In wet bonding the covering is laid 5 to 20 minutes after spreading, which gives the strongest bond. In semi-wet bonding, between 20 and 30 minutes, the film has begun to set and the adhesive marks the covering less. Beyond 30 minutes it behaves as a self-adhesive, which allows vinyl to be laid over vinyl while keeping the option of lifting a piece again.
This is what distinguishes it from the other water-based adhesives in the range, which offer a single setting mode. The site chooses its mode according to the covering and the deadline, without changing product or trowel.
Its open time of around one hour leaves room to spread a full area before unrolling. Foot traffic is possible after 24 hours and full cure is reached in 48 to 72 hours.
It carries the A+ rating for indoor air emissions, the best on the French scale, and resists castor chair traffic. Two arguments that matter as soon as laying takes place in an occupied building or an office.
Adezif supplies this adhesive as an official H.B. Fuller distributor within its range of industrial glues.
Which floor coverings is the TEC 540 used for?
The TEC 540 covers most of the resilient floor coverings on the market, laid over a prepared subfloor.
Vinyl both homogeneous and heterogeneous in tiles or sheets
Linoleum including acoustic-backed sheets and fibre-backed tiles
Carded-backed rubber up to 4 mm thick
Polyolefin and VER coverings
Semi-flexible tiles
Textiles with a PVC or SBR backing
On the subfloor side it is applied over concrete and cement screeds after priming, over wood and particleboard after a fibre-reinforced levelling compound and over anhydrite screeds after suitable preparation. It can also be laid over a dulled polyurethane screed or an underlay.
For an entirely different need — bonding insulation boards or decorative laminate with a long positioning window — the reference to choose is the Köracoll WB 20 and its 80 minutes of open time in two-sided application. The two references do not overlap: one lays a floor, the other assembles panels.
How is a floor covering laid with the TEC 540?
The subfloor must be dry sound cohesive and flat, prepared with the primer or levelling compound suited to its nature. This step decides everything: incomplete surface preparation cannot be made up for by the adhesive.
The adhesive is spread with a TKB A1 or A2 notched trowel for wet and semi-wet laying and with an A4 trowel in self-adhesive mode. Consumption runs between 250 and 350 g/m² depending on subfloor and covering and drops to around 200 g/m² for wall application levelled with a roller.
The waiting time determines the laying mode and is the only parameter to watch. Allow 5 to 20 minutes for wet bonding, 20 to 30 minutes for semi-wet bonding and more than 30 minutes for self-adhesive behaviour. Total open time stays at around one hour.
Ideal ambient temperature is +15 to +25 °C, with a minimum of +10 °C for both air and subfloor and a relative humidity below 75 %. Condensation must be avoided: a subfloor at dew point prevents the film from forming correctly.
After laying roll the covering down then allow 24 hours before foot traffic. Final strength is reached between 48 and 72 hours. The product keeps for 12 months in its sealed original packaging in a temperate room and remains frost-sensitive.
