What is the HB Fuller Helmitin 34026 adhesive?
The Helmitin 34026 is an EVA dispersion adhesive from H.B. Fuller whose defining feature is that it can be reactivated by heat. It is the only reference in the water-based adhesive range that works this way.
The principle changes the logic of the workstation entirely. Both faces are coated, the film is left to dry completely, and assembly happens later by reactivating the adhesive with heat from 80 °C — an iron, an ironing press or an infrared emitter. Coated parts can therefore be prepared in advance and stored before they are assembled.
It should not be confused with a hot melt adhesive, which is applied molten and sets as it cools. Here the adhesive is applied cold and thinned with water, and the heat only wakes up a film that is already dry.
It also works in conventional wet bonding, but with a very short open time of 2 to 3 minutes: the exact opposite of the Köracoll WB 20 and its 80 minutes of positioning. The two references occupy the two extremes of the range.
Adezif supplies this adhesive as an official H.B. Fuller distributor within its range of industrial glues.
What is the Helmitin 34026 used for?
The Helmitin 34026 is made for laminating flexible materials, and in particular PVC films and foams onto an absorbent backing.
PVC film and PVC foam onto polyurethane foam
Paper and cardboard
Leather and cork
Textiles
Lamination of aluminium foil
The bonding mode is chosen according to the substrates. In wet bonding, one absorbent material is needed in the pair so that the water can escape. In heat seal bonding that constraint disappears, since the film is already dry at the moment of assembly — which opens the door to bonding two closed materials together.
It is this second mode that makes it valuable in staged production: a batch of parts is coated, left to dry and assembled whenever needed, with no open time to worry about.
How is the Helmitin 34026 adhesive applied?
The adhesive is applied by brush or roll coater. Thinning and cleaning are done with water, while the adhesive is still fresh.
In wet bonding, the surfaces are coated then joined and pressed immediately or within 2 to 3 minutes. Setting then takes 2 to 3 hours depending on the material, the absorbency of the substrate, the room temperature and the humidity. Applying heat speeds this up considerably.
In heat seal bonding, both faces are coated and left to dry completely. The film is then reactivated at 80 °C minimum and pressed. If you use an iron, place a thin textile layer or siliconised tissue paper between the iron and the bond to protect the surface.
One caution: this adhesive contains very small amounts of flammable solvents. Adequate ventilation is required, and the precaution matters twice over in heat seal bonding since a heat source is involved.
Surface preparation remains decisive: substrates must be clean, dry and free of dust and grease.
Storage is well closed between 5 and 25 °C. The product is cold-sensitive and its shelf life is around 6 months, markedly shorter than the other references in the range.
