Description
3M 92 tape is a single sided adhesive tape with polyimide backing material (brand KAPTON) from the scotch range of the manufacturer 3M. It is part of Class H so can be used up to 180°C continuously, 300°C peak temperature. Its silicone adhesive is thermosetting and therefore has the ability to resist heat and in particular, welding.
Its main use is in the electrical and electronic fields and in particular for the protections of reels, capacitors and cable bundles at high temperatures, during wave soldering for example. This tape burns without carbonisation and continues insulating. It respects the USA standard UL 510 (not flame spreading).
The tape is thin, but its 25 µm film is very robust. The tape is imprintable, which can be useful in some applications for the electronic industry.
Reminder: the thermosetting adhesive requires a minimum polymerisation cycle of 3 hours at 260°C but a 24-hour treatment at 260°C is necessary for high resistance to solvents.
